How To Keep Your Skylight Clean And Maintain Its Functionality

The VELUX Skylights we install come standard with Clean, Quiet & Safe Glass, designed in part to keep you from needing  to constantly clean the skylight's glass. However, like everything else, skylights will need to be cleaned on occasion.

To achieve a clear, new shine on the inside of the skylight, clean the skylight's glass with a either a soft, lint-free cloth, chamois leather, or use a non-abrasive sponge, emphasis on non abrasive :). It's also possible to also use a clean, non-metal window squeegee. Using just clean water is typically enough for cleaning the glass, but ordinary, you can also use a non-abrasive household cleaner.

Occasionally, it will be necessary to clean the outside. Most skylights should be cleaned on the outside every six months. If you notice any debris or debris on the glass, you should clean it immediately. Bear in mind though there is a risk associated with outside skylight cleaning and maintenance. It can be dangerous and for this reason we always recommend using a professional cleaning service.

Here is the Hudson Valley we can experience prolonged cold periods with heavy snowfall, so you are probably  well aware that a considerable amount of snow and ice can build up on your roof during the winter. And, in turn part of your roof, including your skylight will most likely also become covered with snow and ice for long periods of time.

The VELUX Skylights we install are built to withstand heavy amounts of snow, so there's nothing to worry in that regard. The only thing you should keep in mind is that once the temperatures starts to warm up, the snow and ice will often start melting off of your skylight first. So, it's important to make sure the melting snow can drain off from the roof and surrounding gutters when that happens.
